District 9 is a sci-fi thriller that doesn't fail to disappoint. Directed by famed Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and ex Halo producer Neil Blomkamp I had very high hopes for this film. D9 takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa where two decades earlier a massive alien ship appeared mysteriously hovering above the city. The humans come to learn it's filled with sentient alien creatures who are hurded into District 9, a government controlled camp located just under the ship, that quickly turns into slums and eventually handed over to the corporation, MNU or Multi-National United. The star of the film, a Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), is given the task of moving the aliens, now dubbed "Prawns", to the new District 10, hundreds of kilometers outside of Johannesburg. The rest of the movie is a fast paced drama that builds a solid character-to-audience relation. Sharlto does a perfect job acting out as the MNU field operative turned fugitive, betrayed by his own friends and helped by new ones.
District 9 only ran on a budget of around $30 million and it shows with its unrecognizable cast and very limited set. However, it shows what it did with all the money and poured it into some of the greatest effects I've ever seen in a movie. Jam packed with action scenes and futuristic weaponry, District 9 manages to make up for the lackluster PG-13 fights made by the earlier summer blockbuster Transformers. In the end District 9 is a movie that you'll want to see again and again. It shows that an action movie can be entertaining and dramatic without losing a minute of the audiences attention. District 9 is on its way to becomming a science fiction classic in what I hope can be included along such greats as Bladerunner and Alien.
I highly recommend this movie and give it 5/5 stars.
